Silhouette in the News

Many thanks to Leah Blain and the Lakeshore News for including us in Friday's Spotlight.  Lakeshore News Spotlight October 21, 2012

For the past six years, Silhouette Fashion Boutique in Armstrong has been a popular shopping destination for women, and now a second location opened in Salmon Arm on the corner of Alexander and Lakeshore.

“Salmon Arm brought us to Salmon Arm,” says owner TJ Wallis. “We wanted a tourist town and it felt like the right thing. Right now we live in Deep Creek, half way between the two stores, but we will be moving and retiring in Salmon Arm.”

TJ grew up in the Okanagan and is a serial entrepreneur; she was editor/publisher of two magazines, North of 50, and Okanagan Woman Magazine, as well as a registered public accountant.

She loves the fashion industry because it’s always changing. Most of the clothing and accessories in the Salmon Arm store, like in Armstrong, are made in Canada.

“We carry well-priced Canadian fashions, plus some higher end ones, like Frank Lyman.”

TJ says there is a common misconception that Canadian fashions have a higher price tag than imports, but that isn’t necessarily true.

“I buy Canadian not just for altruistic reasons, although that’s certainly part of it. I care about how workers are treated around the world.  But an important aspect is that Canadian clothes fit. There are so many good Canadian lines - hundreds of them. We carry a lot of things people haven’t seen before.”

Some of the lines in the Salmon Arm location are: Frank Lyman, Tango Mango, Jeane & Jax, Pretty Woman, Crystal Fashions, and Kollontai Fashions. The sizes range from x-small to 3x. Silhouette Fashion Boutique also sells purses, wallets and jewelry.

“Jeane & Jax purses are made of vegan leather. That means no animal or animal by-products are used to manufacture the handbag. It’s a faux leather but you’d be hard pressed to tell it’s not the real thing.”

The jewelry is mostly ‘sparkly and fun’ costume jewelry, and TJ brings in pieces to complement the clothing.

For the fall season it’s all about ‘cosy and warm.’ Coral, turquoise, navy, charcoal, and navy are the popular colours.  And naturally, black and white are always classic.

“Fringes, fringes, fringes,” says TJ, “and fake suede are huge this year. You’ll see it in tops, jackets, skirts and purses.”

Silhouette Fashion Boutique is opened 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. They are located at 380 Alexander Street, right across from the TD Bank. They also do online sales. To contact them phone 778-489-5565 or visit them online: shuswapfashion.com
